Tenth anniversary of Romanian revolution commemorated

People in Romania have been marking the tenth anniversary of the beginning of the revolution which overthrew the former Communist President, Nicolae Ceausescu.

In the town of Timisoara -- where the uprising broke out -- speakers demanded tougher action against those who were involved in the killing of about one thousand people ten years ago, but still held official posts.

The former Romanian king, Michael, was among visitors to the city, but correspondents say the event was rather low-key.

Unrest in Timisoara broke out with demonstrations to prevent the arrest of an outspoken local pastor, Laszlo Toekes.

It then spread elsewhere, culminating in the execution of Mr Ceausescu and his wife on Christmas Day 1989.
