Georgia's Shevardnadze slams Russian visa plans

The Georgian President, Eduard Shevardnadze, has criticised plans by Russia to introduce visas for travellers from Georgia and Azerbaijan.

Mr Shevardnadze said the move would be a step towards the destruction of the Commonwealth of Independent States and would wreck the principles on which it was established.

Russia proposed introducing a visa regime earlier this month, saying that it would prevent Islamic militants from entering Chechnya via Georgia or Azerbaijan. Correspondents say relations between Georgia and Russia have been strained by the Russian campaign in Chechnya.

Georgia accused Russia last week of dropping bombs on its territory, near the Chechen border.
