Olympian jailed over kidnap plot
Wolfgang Schwarz
Mr Schwarz faced court in 2002 for trafficking women
An Austrian court has sentenced a former Olympic gold medallist to jail for a plot to kidnap the daughter of a wealthy Romanian businessman.

Wolfgang Schwarz, a figure skater who won gold in the 1968 Winter Olympics, was sentenced to eight years jail.

Schwarz, 59, had previously denied the charges but confessed to a Vienna court on Monday.

He had previously been convicted for trafficking eastern European women for prostitution in Austria.

The Associated Press news agency reported that Schwarz plotted last October to abduct the 18-year old daughter of Andrei Serban, a prominent Romanian businessman.

Austrian prosecutors told local media that Schwarz was motivated by "greed and selfishness" when he planned to ransom the teenager, a student in Vienna, for nearly $4m.

The Olympic champion had faced up to 20 years in prison.

Schwarz, who has cancer, was convicted in 2002 for bringing in women from eastern Europe to work as prostitutes in Viennese brothels. He received an 18-month suspended sentence.
