New Aid for Montserrat

Britain is to provide an extra two-million dollars in aid to the Caribbean island of Montserrat, much of which has been devastated by volcanic eruptions.

The British Minister for International Development, Claire Short, told parliament in London that the new money brings Britain's total commitment to the island to more than eighty-million dollars.

More than half of Montserrat's population has been forced to flee the island; about two-thirds of Montserrat, including the capital, Plymouth.remain uninhabitable,
