EU-US summit: Key quotes

US President George W Bush has held a one-day summit with EU leaders in Vienna, Austria.

He gave a press conference alongside Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

Here are some of their comments on key issues:

GUANTANAMO

George Bush: Let me explain my position. First I'd like to end Guantanamo. I'd like it to be over with. One of the things we will do is send people back to their home countries.

"We've got about 400 people there left, 200 have been sent back... There are some who need to be tried in US courts. They are cold-blooded killers. They will murder somebody if they are let out on the street.

Wolfgang Schuessel: "The problem is, and I will be very frank on that, we can only have a victory in the fight against terror if we don't undermine our common values."

IRAN

George Bush: "We'll come to the table to negotiate so long as the Iranians verifiably end any enrichment activities. The Iranians have said that they will end uranium enrichment activities before - that's what's they told the EU3 - we're just asking them to do what they already said they would do.

"It should not take the Iranians that long to analyse what is a reasonable deal."

Wolfgang Schuessel: "We have come to a crossroads on the Iranian nuclear issue. Iran has to make the right choice.

"We welcome the US involvement, in particular the recent historic signal that the US is ready to join negotiation talks if conditions for resuming negotiations are met... I told President George Bush how much we appreciate his constructive role in this particularly sensitive situation.

"I think now is the right moment for Iran to take this offer to grab it and to negotiate... This is the carrot. Take it."

NORTH KOREA

George Bush: "The North Koreans have made agreements with us in the past and we expect them to keep their agreements, for instance on test launches.

"It should make people nervous when non-transparent regimes who have announced they have nuclear warheads, fire missiles. This is not the way you conduct business in the world."

Wolfgang Schuessel: "There will be a strong statement, strong answer from the international community and Europe will be part of it."

IRAQ

George Bush: "Look, I fully understand we've had our differences on Iraq, and I can understand the differences. People have strong opinions on the subject. But what's past is past, and what's ahead is a hopeful democracy in the Middle East.

"And I want to thank your leadership... on this important issue. I believe the Maliki government is going to succeed. I know the government needs our help, and the European Union has stood up to help, and I can't thank you enough for that."

Wolfgang Schuessel: "We welcome the formation of a new government of unity. We condemn the terrorist acts and the continued campaign of violence against the Iraqi people."

TRADE

George Bush: "We're committed to a successful round [of Doha trade talks] and it's going to take hard work."

Wolfgang Schuessel: "Bilateral ties between Europe and the United States are strong. They are important, we are the most important trade partners for each other.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Jose Manuel Barroso: "We have agreed to establish a European Union-United States high-level dialogue on climate change, clean energy, sustainable development. This will address ways to deliver cost-effective emission cuts, development and employment of new technologies, efficiency and conservation, renewable fuels and other environmental issues such as biodiversity."
