German right-wingers stage march in Dresden
In Germany, one thousand right-wing extremists have staged a rally in the eastern city of Dresden. The march was ostensibly a protest against anexhibition about atrocities committed by German soldiers in the Second World War. But a BBC correspondent in Dresden says the organisers used the march, in effect, to launch the far-right's election campaign, with demonstrators chanting slogans demanding jobs for Germans. The protestors were outnumbered both by left-wing counter-demonstrators and the police. Several people were injured in scuffles between rival groups of demonstrators, and police made a number of arrests. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
