Television cameras captured the hostage drama as it happened
Two gunmen have been detained after seizing two hostages at a fast-food restaurant in Turkey.

The hostages - said to be a customer and a member of staff - were snatched at a branch of Burger King in Istanbul.

Gunshots were heard before the incident came to an end with no injuries. The two gunmen were detained by police.

The BBC's Sarah Rainsford says the gunmen were believed to be Turkish soldiers protesting against recent violence involving Kurdish militants.

Both men were said to have gone absent without leave from their unit, taking their weapons with them.

They were wearing T-shirts with the word Turkey printed on them.

The men took their hostages onto a roof terrace at the restaurant before freeing them, and being taken away by police for questioning.
