For all those concerned about their friends, relatives and acquaintances in Istanbul. From what I have heard from my family and my friends, there is no considerable damage in Istanbul except for certain places in Kartal and in Avcilar. As for people living on the Asian side, the are covered from Maltepe to Kadikoy seems to have suffered minimal damage and no deaths or injuries are reported. On the European side of the city, the area covered up to Yesilkoy sounds fine albeit a couple of buildings reported to be damaged in Atakoy. The earthquake is known to have been felt by residents if Bursa, Eskisehir, Ankara and Kutahya but apparently with no serious damage.

A message for those that have friends and relatives touring and back-packing in Istanbul: Nearly all tourists and back-packers stay in 2 areas of Istanbul. There are a few hotels in the Taksim area and most back-packers stay in the Sultanahmet area. Both areas felt the earthquake but there were no casualties. Most of the damage is to the East of Istanbul. The areas affected are industrial and receive hardly any visitors. I am living in the Sultanahmet area and know that there are very few phones. There are lines of people waiting to make calls. There is a shortage of phonecards and it is difficult to get a line out of the country at this time. Other areas of Istanbul that receive a few visitors are Sariyer, Üsküdar and Kadıkoy. These areas are also OK. Hope this puts a few minds at rest.

I have direct contact with the family Eren from Golcuk. Golcuk is 70% demolished it is one of the worst hit town a lone the Marmara sea. They have a big navy base there and it seems that the government are looking after the navy base and not taking care of the people of Golcuk. Today 48hrs after the quake the people received food and water. Last night when we talked to some of the family they said "babies are crying because they have no milk and the children are crying because they are hungry". Foreign support is super but where is the Turkish government/army?
