As a frequent visitor to Turkey for holidays, and an admirer of your country, I was very shocked and saddened to learn of the tragedy. I live in Ortakoy-Istanbul and my parent live in Eskisehir.
Many of the areas of Istanbul -except Avcilar, Sefakoy- are
fine. I talked with my parent and my friends that live in Eskisehir.
It is also fine except one apartment collapsed due to the
worst construction material.

My family were on holiday in Cesme two weeks ago. My grandchildren, Rachael 8 and Hazel 6 years old, became very goods friends of several Turkish children from Instanbul, particularly, Sehlin Gorkem of Rihtim Cadde Iskele sokar Rasim Pasa Mahallesi Kadikoy Istanbul - Telephone 0212 345 (or 365) 8028 and they are so upset about what has happened and if Sehlin and her family are alright. Can anyone help us find out. We have tried telephoning but no luck to date.
Worst affected places are Golcuk, Izmit, Adapazari, Yalova, Cinarcik
Istanbul had about 500 fatalities mainly in Avcilar area (west of the main airport) but rescue efforts are under control.

GOLCUK, IZMIT, YALOVA, ADAPAZARI NEEDS URGENT HELP ESPECIALLY SPECIALISED RESCUE PERSONNEL WITH EQUIPMENT TO REMOVE HEAVY PIECES. Turkish authorities are overwelmed by the scale of the disaster. People need expert help. There are still people who are alive under the wreckages.

My family is located just west of Golcuk, a small village
named Halidere, there is not word from here yet. It is directly across
from the burning refinery. If any one hears of the FIROL family please
email us, we are very upset and worried. There are 12 members of the
immediate family.
I'm deeply saddended for Turkey at this time. My daughter Hannah is at Marmaris and phoned to say all is well there. Meanwhile I try every day to contact the OZER family in Istanbul- Erol and Okan- but their phones are not working. They live at Atakoy near the airport. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Only some of the low-profile areas such as Bagcilar, Avcilar in Istanbul have been affected. City centers areas such as Kadikoy, Etiler, Besiktas, Uskudar, islands, the immediate areas on Bosphorus and toursitic sites are safe and fine. M Owens: Etiler area is perfectly fine, so your son will surely have his home to return to.The worst hit area in Istanbul is Avcilar(and its proximity).I know that not being able to reach close ones via telephone drives one crazy...but nothing to worry about in Etiler.

Etiler is fine nothing happened there.
I've been contacted by four people and and I still think that I can try to help more. I've been reading e mails of people asking for information about the locations such as Fenerbahce, Etiler etc. I've been to some of those places and I can say that major destruction occurred only in Avcilar and Sefakoy in Istanbul. Those who are asking for help please give detailed information , good luck to all of us.
