Wednesday, August 18, 1999 Published at 09:34 GMT 10:34 UK World: Europe Scenes of devastation in Golcuk The BBC Turkey correspondent has just travelled from Izmit to Golcuk on the Sea of Marmara, one of the places most seriously affected by the earthquake. Thousands of people are still thought to be buried there. Our correspondent says rescue teams are desperately needed; he saw only a few bulldozers working in the ruins, and some people told him they had received no help at all, more than thirty hours after the earthquake struck. Many survivors were still digging with hands and shovels; one young man said; "We can see the bodies, but we can't get to them." Our correspondent says that time is of the essence, although some people are still being brought out alive. The road into Golcuk is a huge traffic-jam, with many people leaving, but even more on their way in to try to search for those missing. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
