I am deeply concerned about the situation in Turkey and I, as well as other people, would like to do anything we can to help the suffering people in Turkey. What is the extent of damage in Bursa? A friend lives there and I have not heard from him since earthquake. Sothnbell@Yahoo.com My girlfriend and I are very concerned about a friend of ours from Istanbul. Her name is Phyllis Tung and she spent a year in the UK. And worked a while in Milan, any news would be much appreciated. Response to Florenece Wise: My uncle lives around Erenkoy and there is no damage in that area. I am sure you friends are O.K. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Turkey. My family is holidaying in Turkey; they are meant to be in Bodrum, but I cannot contact them and they have not contacted me. Can someone try their mobile number: 0542 7373 845. (the 0 might be optional, I am not sure). Thank you very much for your generous offers of help, during this difficult time. Dear Vic Menrath, I have been calling your son' s telephone for several times, but no answer. But there aren't any ruins at Asia side of İstanbul Except the cities Adapazarı,İzmit,Eskişehir and İstanbul there are no infarstructural problems. If you know exactly where your friend etc is I can try to communicate at least. The less urbanized parts of İstanbul are damaged by the earthquake most. In the other mentioned cities communication is partially possible. The GSM centers (mobile phones) start to oparate slowly but have problems still. I can try to help on locating or communicating. Electricity and other infrastructural problems still continue. Telephone: 00 90532 495 7444 I currently live in the US, and my parents live in Istanbul (Kadikoy) with whom I have spoken several times since the quake. Therefore, I know roughly of the damage caused to the different parts in the areas that were hit. I can comment comfortably in general terms yet with no certainty, on the areas inquired about in a few of the letters: To David Aldridge of UK: Kadikoy and Levent were hardly effected at all and there is no damage in those areas. Jon Sweet, USA: Cankiri is also fine and I don't think at all there are deaths or injuries. Mignon Murrel,: USA: Ideal Tepe is not listed among the damaged areas either. Hope this helps. And God knows best. I am looking for a close relative: Just to keep everyone informed. Since the BBC posted my message on the net, we have successfully located 9 people for their friends and families all over the world. We all thank the BBC for this page and if anyone still requires assistance my e-mail is david@iecnc.org I would like to know whether anyone would have seen/met/ knows Tarik Sökucu and his family. He is a 44 years old Turk and has a German wife named Birgit. They have a 12 year old daughter called Aylin, a 7 year old daughter named Ayca, and a nine month old baby girl called Sema. I believe Birgit's father was also with them. As far as I know, they lived on the East side of Istanbul. Unfortunately, I only have a telephone number and no address. Their telephone number is: +902 164 61 42 88. If anyone knows anything about these persons please let me know. Your help is greatly appreciated. This is a response to Dave Barnett's message: Bakirkoy seems ok, I have family living in that part of town and they did not mention any significant damage there. I would like to thank to BBC for this great service and sharing the pain with Turkish people. I have managed to contact with my family on their mobile phone, please let me know if I can help in any way, I know many people from different part of Istanbul. May god help you all and to our country. Thanks so much to all countries who sent help to Turkey. For David Alridge, I also live in Kadikoy and there is no reported damage or deaths there at all. I also know that Levent was unaffected as well. The others areas I don't know about unfortunately. The phone systems are clogged over here and a lot of the mobile network stations have been affected by the quake. I would be glad to help anyone locate friends or relatives in Turkey. My mobile number is 00 90 532 581 5995. Keep trying to call me if you can't get through. Hope I can help. I am very much worried about my 73-year old mother, Hazel Ataman, who lives in a tiny neighborhood called Pasalimani between Kuzguncuk and Üsküdar. I have been trying to call her, but the lines are busy. She is in poor health and all alone without any close relatives to help her. It must be almost impossible for her to get in touch with me. If anyone knows anything about the severity of the damage to that particular area, could she or he drop me an e-mail message. Thank you very much! Kübra Ataman First of all, no deaths in Ankara or Izmir. Second, communication has been affected severely everywhere; so no calls does not mean harm. And; Asim Can Gündüz, what are their tel. numbers? Is there a web site with a list of earthquake victims? My friend Vedat Yakar from Germany is now in Golcuk and I would appreciate any news about him. My son contacted me via e-mail. See below. He's okay. Thanks for your info. I really appreciate it. I have some old friends that I would like to check on in Istanbul - 1) Mujgan Bulbul in Maltepe and 2)Burak Gurkan of Haci Husam Sk. Ozan Apt. B Blok No3, Daire 16 81300 Kadikoy Ist. What is the damage in Kadikoy (on the Asian side)? I'd be grateful for any news I am missing my Uncle, my cousins and my aunt who are living near Izmit. I cannot reach them by phone and don't know if they are alive or not. Please help and give me an idea of how to contact them thank you Can help phoning/e-mailing people trying to contact relatives in the disaster zone. I speak English my husband speaks English and Turkish. Telephone number: 00 90 232 438 5772 The Vehbi Koc Foundation- American Hospital in Istanbul is hospitalizing wounded people brought from the earthquake zone... So, people may call and ask the Hospital whether their relations are there... Here is the telephone number: 9-0-212-311 20 00 (Ask Ms. Filiz Basaran, The PR Coordinator of the American Hospital) If anyone does need any help contacting anyone please let me know by email as the phones are off and on. Please remember to include your email or phone number. No promises but will do what I can. mellery@bridge.com I would like to know if our friend Gizem Hakan and her parents who live in Sunollar Apt. in Erenkoy, Istanbul are o.k. we have tried phoning but cannot connect. I pray they are safe. Here are some numbers of crisis centers in the affected cities: I am looking for my missing mother and brother. My mothers name is Melek Durak and my brothers name is Hakan Ramazan Yorguner. I would be grateful for any news either by telephone or email. I am looking for my friends who live in Istanbul, Turkey. Here are some details about them: Their names are Selda and Fazil Aydin. They both work as Inspectors for the Ministry of Finance in Istanbul. They have a 4-year old son Cansin, who was born in the United States. Selda's parents live in Ankara. Her sister's name is Nevda (Address: Sn. Nevda Asal, Kuleli Sok, No. 53/4 Asal Apt., Gaziosmanpasa, Ankara, Turkey) and she has a brother who is studying to be a medical doctor. Fazil's mother lives in Izmir. If you have any information about Selda and Fazil's whereabouts or have any tips on how to locate them, please email me at malathyc@yahoo.com. Please feel free to call if you are having trouble contacting relatives or loved ones. My mother had great trouble calling me thus I know how difficult and frustrating it is. My telephone number is 00 90532 5236453 I have email access to over ten friends living in Istanbul. They offered me help in locating my family. They are also willing to help others who are in need of information or who would like to have other kinds of help. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if I can help. Dear Vic Menrath; I have called Ayhan several times in order to find out whether your son and his girlfriend are all right. However he was not home due to the continuing slight quakes in Istanbul. But I strongly believe that they are all right because nobody reported deaths on the Asian side of Istanbul (their telephone number is on the Asian side) so please do not worry about them. For those people looking for friends or relatives, be aware that communication with the outside world is still very difficult, both by normal and mobile phone. The areas that have been badly affected in Istanbul are all on the European side out near the airport - in particular Avcilar and Halkali, with less damage in Sefakoy, Bagcilar and Zeytinburnu. The central parts of Istanbul, including the major tourist areas are fine. I am looking for information about my brother , Michael Oates and his family , who were in Yalova at the time of the earthquake. I am trying to locate and check on my sister, niece, and brother-in-law in a town called Eskisehir, Turkey which is near the earthquake epicenter in Izmit. My father has relatives in Istanbul, Bursa, and Bolu. I would like to know how extensive the damage in these areas is. Any assistance you can provide in helping me locate my sister, niece, and brother-in-law will be much appreciated. All these towns appear to be less than 200 miles from the epicentre in Izmit.Again thank you We are unable to contact our very dear musician friends, Sadako Yokoyama (flautist) and husband and son Emin (oboist) and Deniz Ozistek in the Istanbul suburb of Kartal-Maltepe at Deniz Apt, 23/7. Any news or relaying of our message would be greatly appreciated. I've just checked from the latest news and USA embassy web site, there is no death or injury of an us citizen reported. (see www.usis-ankara.org.tr) This is a response to the messages of J Garmon, J Sweet, M Murrel, R Atterby. Special notice to Jon Sweat: there is no death or injuries reported from Cankiri. To Vic Mennath from Australia: I called the phone you have given several times, it was ringing (a good sign in this case) but there was no answer. I'll try later again. I may be able to help locate your relatives in Istanbul. I have contacts in Turkey who can try to telephone them to see if they are all right. If you are having trouble contacting them and if you would like my help please e-mail me at david@iecnc.org, ICQ: 16036578, Tel: +903928158905 or +903928156601. All I need is their telephone number (and/or mobile) and their name. Thanks a lot; I have been able to call the parents of my girlfriend today morning, they`re alive; it must have been horrible, these 45 seconds... Samanthat and Taluy saw my message through BBC. They contacted my family and the report is that they are fine. Thank you BBC for your help in this terrible time. And thank you Samantha and Taluy for your prompt response. God help us all. God, please help the Turks. Sabahat Stone, As I know Findikzade region of Istanbul is all right. It is very hard to contact people via telephone, especially those with cellular phones, living in İzmit, Yalova and Golcuk.Try at different hours and for several times; with luck you may be able to contact your parents. My mother lives there by herself and I cannot reach her. Anyone who can provide news, I would appreciate. Thanks in advance for your support. I am very distressed to hear of this news...an acquaintance of mine, and a very dear friend of my roommate (who is in London), was in Istanbul. I hope she is alright, and everything is fine with her family...her name is Zumrut Firdevs Alp. I'm not sure where she was staying...she might have even missed it altogether, but I still hope she's okay. What a terrible tragedy!
