Turkey seizes five in 'bomb plot'
Map of Turkey
Five men have been arrested in Turkey in connection with a plot to carry out bomb attacks in the Mediterranean resort of Mersin, security forces said.

Police said one of the men was thought to belong to a Kurdish militant group.

Officers said 1.5kg (3.3lb) of plastic explosives and 20kg of chemicals used in the making of bombs had been seized from the house of one of the suspects.

Kurdish rebels have stepped up their campaign of attacks on civilian and army targets in the past few months.

The separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party, known as the PKK, has been fighting the government since 1984 in a campaign to create a Kurdish homeland in the south-east.

Police said in a statement they had arrested the five men - one a suspected PKK militant and the other four accused of helping him - in Mersin, a southern town popular with local tourists.

They were detained while "in the process of preparing for attacks on government buildings as well as facilities of touristic and economic significance", the statement said.

Turkey has been hit by several bombings in recent weeks - some blamed on Kurdish militants, others on Islamists.

Five soldiers were killed on Friday in a bomb attack in Turkey's south-eastern Hakkari province blamed on suspected Kurdish rebels.

A day earlier, a mother and daughter died in an explosion in Istanbul's residential Pendik district. The cause remains unknown.

On Tuesday, two small blasts in the Mediterranean resort of Antalya injured at least six people.

Five people were killed when a bomb ripped through a bus in the Aegean Sea resort of Kusadasi in July. Turkish authorities suspect Kurdish militants of involvement, although the PKK denied responsibility.
