Protest over Pamplona's bull run
Peta protest in Pamplona
Activists were barred from holding a naked protest
Hundreds of people wearing only their underwear have protested in the Spanish city of Pamplona over the annual and popular running of the bulls.

The 300 activists from campaign group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals had wanted to protest naked, but city officials refused permission.

They gathered to highlight the "cruel bull running" which attracts tens of thousands of tourists.

During the street run, people try to stay ahead of the bulls, often failing.

The highly dangerous annual event was popularised by writer Ernest Hemingway.

"Before being let loose in the streets of Pamplona the bulls are drugged and submitted to various acts of torture to frighten them," Peta said in a statement.

Last year a Spaniard died from his injuries after one run and about 50 others were injured during the 800m run, held as part of the San Fermin festival from 7 July to 14 July.
