The raids began early in the morning
French anti-terrorist police have arrested at least 12 people in a series of raids on suspected Islamist militants groups in the Paris region, officials say.

One report said those detained included at least one Muslim imam and some of his followers.

Officers seized two guns and equipment for making false identity papers, police and legal officials said.

Reuters news agency quoted a judicial source as saying the items could point to criminal, not terrorist activity.

The suspects are being held at the headquarters of the Paris Crime Squad.
