The push into Kosovo in pictures



Led by the elite Parachute and Gurkha Regiments, British troops have spearheaded one of the biggest military manouevres in Europe since World War II.

Chinook helicopters took off at dawn carrying the first contingent of soldiers taking part in Operation Joint Guardian.

Gurkha soldiers awaited their turn at the Macedonian border at Blace, eager for a taste of the action.

Ethnic Albanian refugees cheered on British armoured vehicles that pass by their camp at Stankovic, hoping they can return home soon.

In scenes reminiscent of a war movie, British soldiers and armoured personnel carriers trundled across the border into Kosovo at about 0300 GMT.

Nepalese Gurkhas secured a street in the border village of General Jankovic ahead of thousands of oncoming Nato troops.

Rebel soldiers from the Kosovo Liberation Army came out to greet the Nato soldiers and inform them of mine hazards ahead.

About 32km into Kosovo, helicopters and troops crossed a bridge south of Kacanik.

The Royal Gurkha Rifles boarded a Chinook at Kacanik before heading north towards the capital, Pristina.
