Bomb strikes inside Albania

NATO has confirmed that some of its aircraft dropped bombs on Albanian army forces on the border with Kosovo.

A spokesman said it was an accident which happened while the Alliance was attacking Serb forces in the Marini border area.

He said an Albanian army position was damaged, but no-one was hurt.

Witnesses on the border described a heavy bombardment, with Albanian forces fleeing the scene.

There's been heavy fighting in the area recently between Serbs and the Kosovo Liberation Army for control of high ground which straddles the border.

The BBC Defence Correspondent says this is the most embarrassing mistake NATO has made so far in its air campaign against Yugoslavia.
