Cypriots Plan Demo

Greek Cypriots are due to demonstrate shortly 0700 GMT against the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is celebrating its fourteenth anniversary.

As part of the protests against the republic, which is recognised only by Turkey, Greek Cypriots who were driven from the north say they'll attempt to return to their former homes.

The BBC correspondent in Nicosia says this means trying to take their cars, loaded with furniture, across the buffer zone of the divided island, past United Nations troops, and then attempting to pass Turkish military positions.

Organisers say they want a peaceful protest, but past demonstrations have ended in violence, and both Cypriot police and UN troops are on high alert.
