Macedonian soldier shot dead near Serbian border

Diplomats in the Macedonian capital, Skopje, say a Macedonian soldier has been shot dead in the border area with Serbia.

A senior Western diplomat said the Macedonian was killed by shots that were believed to have come from the Serbian side of the border. There's been no confirmation of the shooting from the Macedonian defence ministry, and no official statements have been made by NATO. A BBC correspondent in Skopje says the Macedonian government has long made clear its worries that the presence of NATO troops in the region could see it drawn into a conflict with Yugoslavia.

Meanwhile, the UN refugee agency, the UNHCR, says it has now accounted for all the Kosovo Albanians removed by the Macedonian authorities from the Blace camp on the border.

The refugees are now said to be in Albania or on their way there.
