World: Europe Picture gallery: Tunnel inferno
The fire in the Mont Blanc tunnel in the Alps turned the crossing into an inferno, melting the asphalt and causing part of the concrete casing to collapse.
The fire raged for three days before it was brought under control.
Around 40 vehicles
were involved in tackling the blaze.
Firefighters from France, Switzerland and Italy worked together to lower temperatures, recover bodies and tame the last pockets of
flames.
Exhausted firefighters faced battled searing heat and poisonous smoke.
