Germany probes Bali bombing

Many Europeans were hit in the blast

Germany is to launch its own investigation into the Bali bombing in which at least one German was killed alongside nearly 200 others, including many Europeans.

Britain: 18 dead, 15 missing

Germany: 1 dead, up to 12 missing

Portugal - up to 12 missing

Sweden - 2 dead, up to 10 missing

Denmark - 3 missing

Switzerland: 1 dead

Netherlands: 1 dead

France: 1 dead

Greece - 1 missing

The German Government is also sending agents to help identify German victims.

Many Europeans were killed in the massive bomb attack on a nightclub on Saturday, which Indonesia is blaming on the al-Qaeda network.

Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has sent his condolences to Indonesia and Australia, the two countries worst affected.

Other European countries hit include:

• Sweden: Two Swedes are reported dead by hospitals, up to 10 are missing and three young Swedish women were wounded in the attack.
• PortugalTwelve Portuguese people are missing, says the foreign ministry in Lisbon.
• Switzerland: One Swiss woman has died, five other Swiss have been wounded, two of them critically.
• France: Three French citizens have been severely injured and two others suffered lighter wounds; reports that one French citizen has been killed are being investigated.

Germany's Chief Federal Prosecutor, Kay Nehm, said the inquiry - which must be approved by the justice ministry - was being set up under a new law passed after the September 11 attacks on the US.

It allows investigations abroad if German citizens are killed by acts of terrorism.

Twelve Germans are still missing, and six injured Germans have been sent to Australia for treatment.

The attacks clearly show that "international terrorism knows no boundaries" and the international community must be committed to a global fight against terror, a German government spokesman said.
