The operator of the rail tunnel linking Britain and France, Eurotunnel, says it intends to set up a round-the-clock system of patrols to meet concerns over safety.
The announcement comes after a report, commissioned by the company, into a fire two years ago.
No-one died, but emergency procedures were found to be inadequate to cope with the blaze.
The report recommended a twenty-four hour emergency watch to replace surveillance teams on part-time patrol.
Eurotunnel says it's drawing up strict specifications to enable this to be done, but adds there are no grounds for public concern about safety.
