Ukraine tragedy claims 85th life
The plane failed to complete a low-level manoeuvre
A man critically injured in the Ukraine air show disaster has died, bringing the number killed in the world's worst air show disaster to 85.
The disaster happened when a fighter jet ploughed into spectators at an air show in Lviv while performing an aerobatic display. Myron Tsyonovskiy, who was in his 50s, died after several days on life support systems.
More than 200 people were injured in the tragedy, some of them suffering horrific burns. Nearly 70 of them - including more than 20 children - remain in hospital, some of them critically ill. The Ukrainian President, Leonid Kuchma, has vowed to punish those responsible. He fired the air force chief shortly after the tragedy. Three other senior officials and his defence chief followed. The country's prosecutor-general later said that the pilots, who ejected safely and were still being treated in hospital, were partly to blame. A formal inquiry is continuing. |
