UN renews mediation efforts in Cyprus

The UN envoy to Cyprus, Dame Margaret Ann Hercus, has started a round of confidence-building talks with Cypriot leaders to try to reunite the divided island.

Dame Margaret held talks with the Greek Cypriot leader, Glafcos Clerides, in Nicosia and is to meet his Turkish counterpart Rauf Denkish next week in an open-ended period of negotiations.

The two leaders agreed to talks after a meeting with the UN secretary general Kofi Annan, during the recent General Assembly meeting in New York.
