Serbia transfers Kosovo Albanian prisoners
The Serbian authorities have begun transferring the last of the ethnic-Albanian prisoners jailed during the Kosovo crisis back to the province.
The release - agreed last week between Serbia and the United Nations administration in Kosovo - was one of the key conditions for continued US aid to Belgrade. More than 100 ethnic Albanians remain in Serbian prisons. Many of them were sentenced for what the Yugoslav authorities called terrorist offences, but human rights groups have raised doubts about their trials. The prisoners' cases will now be reviewed in Kosovo, where some may be required to serve out their sentences. The agreement also covers the transfer to Serbia of Serb prisoners held in Kosovo.
