Lucio Battisti dies

The death has been announced in Italy of Lucio Battisti, one of the country's most successful and influential singer-songwriters.

Battisti, who was fifty-five, died in hospital in Milan, but the cause of death is not known.

Lucio Battisti rose to fame in the late 1960s.

He influenced a whole generation of Italian singer-songwriters who emerged in the 1970s.

Many of his songs were translated into other European languages.

Lucio Battisti virtually withdrew from public life at the beginning of the 1980s.
