In pictures: Quiet across Europe
People joined together to observe a three minute silence across the European continent on Friday in honour of those who died in the attacks on the United States.
![]() At the US embassy in Paris, mourners stood in silence by the banks of flowers which have piled up since the attacks
![]() Others paused at the Wall of Peace - the lift in the Eiffel Tower also came to a stop
![]() Office staff ceased work at midday in the centre of Madrid to mark the moment of silence
![]() The people of Belfast know only too well what horror terrorism can inflict
![]() Landmarks across Europe became the focus of mourning - this couple marked the silence at the Colosseum in Rome
![]() And the Greek flag flew at half-mast over the Parthenon
![]() Fire-fighters in the Swiss town of Basel mourned their colleagues in New York many of whom died in the rescue attempts
![]() And in Lisbon, traffic came to a halt for the three minutes
![]() Some countries also observed a silence on Thursday - these German shipbuilders stopped work for five minutes
