People joined together to observe a three minute silence across the European continent on Friday in honour of those who died in the attacks on the United States.


Paris embassy
At the US embassy in Paris, mourners stood in silence by the banks of flowers which have piled up since the attacks

Wall of peace
Others paused at the Wall of Peace - the lift in the Eiffel Tower also came to a stop

Madrid
Office staff ceased work at midday in the centre of Madrid to mark the moment of silence

Belfast
The people of Belfast know only too well what horror terrorism can inflict

Colosseum in Rome
Landmarks across Europe became the focus of mourning - this couple marked the silence at the Colosseum in Rome

Parthenon, Greece
And the Greek flag flew at half-mast over the Parthenon

Basel
Fire-fighters in the Swiss town of Basel mourned their colleagues in New York many of whom died in the rescue attempts

Lisbon
And in Lisbon, traffic came to a halt for the three minutes

Kiel shipyard
Some countries also observed a silence on Thursday - these German shipbuilders stopped work for five minutes
