Night club near Auschwitz closed down
The authorities in Poland have ordered the closure of a controversial discotheque near the site of the former Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz after protests from Jewish groups. The decision, by the governor of the southern Polish province of Malopolska, overturned an earlier clearance for the night club given by a local mayor. One Jewish Group the Simon Wiesenthal Centre said that the disco had encouraged young people to dance in the immediate vicinity of what it called the largest Jewish graveyard in history. The nightclub was opened last year about a one-and-a-half kilometres from the former camp. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
