Russia launches new carrier rocket

Russia has successfully launched the new version of its Proton carrier rocket from the Baikonur space centre in Kazakhstan.

The Proton-M is capable of carrying a heavier cargo than its predecessors, and correspondents say Russia is hoping the new rocket will improve its position in the satellite launch market.

The carrier also uses less toxic fuels than its predecessors.

Emissions from used rocket elements have in the past caused friction between Russia and Kazakhstan.
