Anti-globalisation clashes in Naples

There have been violent clashes in the Italian city of Naples between police and protestors opposed to economic globalisation.

Thousands of demonstrators hurled paving stones and smoke bombs at police, who responded with tear gas and baton charges.

An estimated twenty-thousand protestors had gathered in the city, which was hosting a meeting of the Global Forum, a conference on the impact of the internet on government.

The protestors say the internet is only exacerbating inequalities. The clashes were followed by isolated flare-ups in other parts of the city, where cars shops and offices were damaged.
