Russian prosecutor-general alarmed over corruption

The Russian Prosecutor-General, Vladimir Ustinov, says the machinery of government is mired in bribery and abuses as never before.

Speaking at a national conference of prosecutors, Mr Ustinov said Federal and regional elites were closely associated with criminal groups.

Mr Ustinov said the Russian legal system too often tended to concentrate efforts on relatively small offenders, while senior officials consorted with those suspected of organised crime.
