Patrick Kluivert: This could be his year

The BBC's Alan Hansen saw Patrick Kluivert score a hat-trick against Yugoslavia, and believes that Euro 2000 could belong to the young Dutch striker.

Kluivert has always had potential to be great and he has shown recently that he is great. This could be his time. Against the Yugoslavs, he and Bergkamp had all the time and space in the world, and with their ability, they are always going to create and score goals..

It was a superb performance from the Dutch, but it was a mixture of their brilliance and Yugoslav incompetence. If you give great players time and space to play they will carve you apart. The marking in the penalty area was non existent. It will be much different when the Dutch face the Italians. Dino Zoff's side have come into the tournament without much of a reputation but they are good defensively.

But this was one of the best performances of the tournament, although you have to take into account the opposition. They just never got started - I thought the first goal was a mistake from the goalkeeper and after that their heads went down.

I thought it was a good all-round performance from Holland - all 11 players were impressive today. I thought Overmars showed good pace but no one really stood out - they all played to a very high standard.

As for the Yugoslavs - they have been great for the tournament. Their matches against Slovenia and particularly Spain were absolutely magnificent. But against the Dutch, it just wasn't their day.

As for the semi-final, I really think that the Italians will be much more difficult to play against. Holland's chances really depend on the quality of their performance. There will be fewere chances than in the game against Yugoslavia.

Italy are not as good at getting forward as the Dutch, although they do have real quality in the likes of Del Piero. But their real strength is in stopping the opposition from playing. The Dutch will need to play as much of the game as possible in the Italian half and look for a single moment of brilliance from the likes of Kluivert or Bergkamp to break the deadlock.

I think it will be a really tight game, but if I was forced to make a prediction, I would keep faith with a Holland-France final. I think the French will beat a fantastic attacking side in Portugal, but I am less certain about the outcome between Holland and Italy.
