Oktay Derelioglu

Oktay Derelioglu
A prolific scoring rate at youth and under 21 level seemed destined to continue at international level when in only his second game against San Marino in November 1996 he matched a 72 year old national record, scoring four goals in one game.

In eleven starts since that match he has netted a further four goals, including a brace against Northern Ireland in Euro 2000 qualifying, however on and off the pitch he has also suffered in that time.

His career began to go off the rails when he found his wife dead after she had committed suicide in the summer of 1997.

On the pitch he dropped down to the Turkish second division before going into hiding in Istanbul after becoming "disillusioned".

This season he has not been in the best form since being loaned from Besiktas to Gaziantepspor.

Euro 2000 offers the 24 year old a chance to rediscover his footballing touch which is characterised by strong running, unselfish support play and 100% commitment to the cause.
