Petrescu in Hagi pledge
Dan Petrescu says that Romania are determined to beat England on Tuesday in order to prolong Gheorghe Hagi's international career.
Hagi, the team captain, will miss the game through suspension and has already stated that the tournament will be the last one he plays in for his country.
And if England draw or win, Romania will be out of Euro 2000. That thought has not escaped Petrescu or his team-mates.
"We would love to give him one more game in the quarter-finals," said the Chelsea player.
Hagi is already considered the greatest Romanian player ever, having played at international level since 1983, amassing 124 caps and scoring 35 goals.
"He is the most important player for us, but we can play without him. We played last year without him and we beat Portugal away when he didn't play. We will play hard, but it will be more difficult for us,"
As for Hagi, he is confident his colleagues can get the job done without him.
"Romania can beat England without me. It's difficult, but why not?" said the veteran playmaker.
"It's very difficult for me because I wanted to play in this game.
"This competition is goodbye for me, but I can be proud of my career. Maybe, just maybe, Romania will beat England. It's difficult, but we have a last chance and we have to wait and see."
The 35-year-old plans to retire from international football in August, after a freindly against Yugoslavia in Bucharest.
