Beto joined Sporting in 1996 after previously playing for Uniao Lamas and Campomaiorense.

He debuted for the national side in a World Cup qualifier against Germany in 1997 and has since been a regular in the Portuguese squad.

His international career has been largely limited to substitute appearances, with Jorge Costa and Fernando Couto the preferred central defensive partnership.
