Clockwatch: Italy v Belgium
Italy 2-0 Belgium
5 mins: Filip de Wilde, the Belgian keeper who made an horrific howler in the opening game against Sweden, is an early hero this time around. He pulls off a fine double save to deny first Paolo Maldini then Filippo Inzaghi.
6 mins: Barely a minute after their early escape, the co-hosts are behind, as Demetrio Albertini's precise free kick from the right is met by the head of Francesco Totti, who gives de Wilde no chance.
9 mins: Belgium's response is magnificent, and Bart Goor is desperately unlucky to see a fierce left-foot strike thud against the crossbar.
10 mins: Belgian dangerman Emile Mpenza threatens for the first time, turning on the edge of the area to screw in a shot. But the effort bounces straight to Italian keeper Francesco Toldo, who has little trouble in gathering.
13 mins: Maldini whips in a cross from the left which causes jitters in the Belgian defence, but Inzaghi cannot keep his header down and the ball flies high and wide.
19 mins: Marc Wilmots puts Impenza in for a half-chance, but his shot is deflected for a corner, from which Marc Wilmots' header flies straight at Toldo.
20 mins: Clever play by Branco Strupar sees the striker tee himself up for an overhead kick. The ball is half cleared but Wilmots pounces on the loose ball to force a brave stop from the outrushing Toldo.
25 mins: Yves Vanderhaeghe is lucky to escape after appearing to handle in his own penalty area, but Belgium break and Strupar sees his shot blocked by the Italian defence.
26 mins: Strupar's free kick fails to threaten, flying off the Italian wall and looping over Toldo's crossbar.
27 mins: Totti has the ball in the net for the second time following Mark Iuliano's through ball, but the offisde flag had long since been raised.
30 mins: Nico van Kerkhoven drillks in a shot from the left but his strike flies well wide.
32 mins: More long-range shooting from Belgium, but Vanderhaeghe's effort is comfortable for Toldo after Mpenza sets the midfielder up.
34 mins: Verheyen leads another Belgian raid forward, but with options to his left and right he opts to shoot and fires tamely at Toldo.
35 mins: Iuliano hauls down Verheyen five yards outside the Italian penalty area, but Goor's curling free kick is comfortably saved once more.
39 mins: Conte's cross sets up Inzaghi in front of goal, but the striker can't connect fully with his shot and the effort loops straight to de Wilde.
44 mins: Strupar and Mpenza combine to set up Wilmots, but his sidefoot shot is once again comfortable for Toldo.
44 mins: Antonio Conte's clumsy challenge on Goor earns him the first booking of the game.
45 mins: Gianluca Zambrotta follows him into the book but he is unlucky after appearing to make no contact with Vanderhaeghe.
47 mins: Belgium start the second half strongly and Lorenzo Staelens' snap shot produces a fine save from Toldo at his left-hand post.
53 mins: Wilmots climbs to meet a Belgian corner but sees his header fly wide of the left-hand post.
63 mins: Toldo is called into action once more, this time diving full-length to his right to palm away a free kick from substitute Luc Nilis.
66 mins: Having withstood the Belgian pressure, Italy pounce for a second goal. Stefano Fiore starts the move, then finishes it clinically with a right-foot shot inside de Wilde's left-hand post after Inzaghi's return pass.
69 mins: Belgium's frustration at going two down spills over as Wilmots is booked for clipping Conte from behind as he looked to break down the right.
71 mins: Wilmots responds well, earning himself space just inside the penalty area, but sees Alessandro Nesta pounce brilliantly to block his firm strike.
79 mins: Valgaeren heads the ball beyond de Wilde and into his own net under pressure from substitute Marco Delvecchio, but his blushes are spared as the Italian is ruled to have pushed.
87 mins: Emile Mpenza is presented with a glorious chance to pull one back and set up a nervy finish, but snatches at his shot and screws the ball woefully wide from 12 yards.
90 mins: Italy break clear as Belgium push forward in search of a lifeline, but substitutes Alessandro Del Piero and Marco Delvecchio are crowded out well by the hosts.
90 mins: Del Piero looks to catch de Wilde out with a curling free kick deep into stoppage time, but the keeper reacts quickly to tip the shot over the bar.
