Clarence Seedorf

Clarence Seedorf
Seedorf has almost suffered from having achieved too much at too young an age.

A member of the Ajax first team at 16, an international at 18, European Cup-winner at 19 and Serie A star at 20, he then experienced a fall from grace which many observers put down to the apparent high regard in which he held himself.

His spell with Sampdoria ended in disappointment, and although he won a second European Cup with Real Madrid, he was on the move again last season, this time to Inter.

His Euro 96 experience was far from happy either, as it was his missed penalty which sent the Dutch crashing out of the tournament at the quarter-final stage.

Despite these tribulations, Seedorf remains a gifted player who complements Edgar Davids in centre midfield extremely well.

Having been a thorn in Gus Hiddink's side four years ago, he has reined in some of his arrogance under current coach Frank Rijkaard and will have a vital role to pay if Holland are to repeat their European Championship triumph of 12 years ago.
