Aron Winter

Aron Winter
If Winter makes the Dutch squad for Euro 2000 - and there is every indication that he will, despite suffering from Ajax's poor season - he should break Ruud Krol's record of 83 caps for the national team.

Not that Winter has ever felt fully settled in the Dutch team.

Many of his appearances have been as a substitute, and unless Frank Rijkaard switches tactics once again and decides to use him as a defensive midfielder, he will again be on the bench during Euro 2000.

Winter has already played a role in six major international tournaments, making his debut against Greece as far back as 1987 before being included in the squad for the successful tilt at the European Championship in 1988.

He went on to play a role in Italia 90 and Euro 92, played three games in the 1994 World Cup and scored in the quarter-final defeat to Brazil, and performed well when selected in Euro 96 and France 98.

Best known in the UK for providing cover for Paul Gascoigne at Lazio in the early nineties, Surinam-born Winter spent five years with the Rome-based team before switching to Inter Milan and then back to Ajax, where he started his career as a teenager in the mid-eighties.
