Arthur Numan

Arthur Numan
Now hoping to stay injury-free after being dogged by a succession of problems in the past two years, Numan is expected to take the left-back berth following Winston Bogarde's withdrawal from the squad.

After the World Cup in France the former PSV skipper made a lucrative 5m move to Rangers, where he again linked up with coach Dick Advocaat, the man who originally persuaded him, then a winger, to switch to left-back.

But a serious ankle injury, followed by a hamstring problem, has made it difficult for the 30-year-old to hang on to his international place.

A squad member in Euro 96, he only pushed his way ahead of Bogarde in the pecking order during the qualifiers for the World Cup two years ago.

It was then that his bad luck began. Prior to the injuries, in his last game as captain of PSV, he was punched in the face by an angry fan.

Then came the injuries. But if Rijkaard is convinced he can stay fit, he may well still get the nod ahead of the misfiring Bogarde.
