Edwin van der Sar

Edwin Van Der Saar
While England fans will remember van der Sar as the man who picked the ball out of his net four times in Holland's Wembley thumping during Euro 96, the Dutch know him as their most consistent performer in years.

If proof were needed, look no further than his club badge - he is the first non-Italian keeper in Juventus' history.

Rock-solid on crosses and an excellent shot-stopper, van der Sar excels with the ball at his feet.

It may sound like a strange way of praising a goalkeeper, but when you play for a team which puts a high emphasis on keeping possession, it is vital you are not hoofing the ball into Row Z every time you get a backpass.

A product of the Ajax youth system and winner of the Champions League with that team in 1995, he has also won the Uefa Cup, Super Cup and four Dutch league titles.

He is established as the Dutch first choice ahead of two Premier League players, Sander Westerveld and Ed de Goey.
