Dutch striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has completed a move back to the English Premiership after Chelsea finally clinched a 15m deal with Atletico Madrid.

Hasselbaink, who was surprisingly left out of Holland's Euro 2000 squad, has agreed personal terms.

The move makes the Dutchman the Blues' record signing, topping the 10m they paid for Chris Sutton last summer.

The fee also matches the British transfer record paid by Newcastle for Alan Shearer in 1996.

Hasselbaink said: "It's a very big move and I feel happy with it.

"When I heard Chelsea were interested I was very pleased and hoped the deal would go through.

"I enjoyed my time in English football and I am happy to be back at a great club like Chelsea, who are very ambitious.

"I hope to get as high as possible, that's my aim next season. I hope I can make Chelsea stronger and I'm going to give 100%.

"It's a strong squad at Chelsea with a lot of players but I hope I can make my mark. I had a lot of options but Chelsea for me was the best.

"When I left Leeds I had an offer from Chelsea. I wanted to come here but they didn't want to let me go to another English club.

"So I had to leave to go to Atletico."

The former Leeds United man was the only bright spot in a dire season for Atletico.

Hasselbaink joined Atletico for 12m from Leeds in the summer of 1999 after finishing joint top scorer in the English Premiership.

Although Atletico had a terrible season in Spain, Hasselbaink has been a success, scoring 24 goals this season - half the total scored.

But it still was not enough to prevent the Primera Liga club from being relegated and the Madrid club desperately need to raise cash from player sales.

Chelsea are reported to have offered him 40,000 a week after tax on a four-year deal.

This would make his gross salary at nearer 60,000 a week, a fee which adds up to 3m a year also taking into account his signing-on fee.
