Oliver Bierhoff

Oliver Bierhoff
From the surprise package of Euro 96, when he came off the bench to score twice in the final against the Czech Republic, Bierhoff has matured into Germany's most potent striker and a highly regarded captain.

Only four months before the Golden Goal that sealed the Czech Republic's fate at Wembley, he had made his international debut in Portugal and went into Euro 96 as a reserve.

He was the top scorer in Serie A two years ago with 27 goals for Udinese and during the France 98 qualifiers he scored a hat-trick in seven minutes after coming on as a substitute in Belfast.

Before his rise to the top, he did his fair share of travelling, playing for Essener, Bayer Uerdingen, Hamburg, Borussia Monchengladbach and Salzburg in Austria, before arriving in Italy with Ascoli in 1991.

He switched to Udinese when Ascoli were relegated in 1995, and has since joined AC Milan for 7.5m.
