Voller named as caretaker coach
![]() Can former striker Voller be a successful coach?
Former Germany striker Rudi Voeller has been appointed national team coach on a caretaker
basis.
A German Football Federation spokesman said Voeller would be in charge until June 2001, when Bayer Leverkusen coach Christoph Daum, still under contract with his club for another season, will take over. Voeller replaces Erich Ribbeck, who stepped down after Germany were eliminated from Euro 2000 at the group stage after a dismal performance in the tournament.
There had been speculation Daum would serve as coach of both the German team and Leverkusen until the end of his contract with his club. But Leverkusen were unhappy with the proposal, so the two parties have settled on this compromise solution. Voeller's former striking team-mate Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has meanwhile been chosen to head a task force aimed at working on a rebuilding programme for the ailing soccer giants.
