Matthaus under attack in America
![]() Matthaus at Euro 2000
Germany star Lothar Matthaus has been the subject of fresh criticism claiming he no longer deserves a starting place with his American Major League side New Jersey MetroStars.
Players and fans at the American team have questioned whether Matthaus, holder of a world record 150 caps and veteran of five World Cups, deserves his place in the side this season. MetroStars were struggling towards the bottom of the league with only three wins in nine matches but in his absence they have lost only one match with five wins and a draw. Matthaus, speaking at the MetroStars training base said: "If someone has something to say to me let him say it to my face.
Asked about his team's improvement Matthaus said: "I am delighted to see we are playing better. " I have the impression that the quality of our football is improving, that the players are getting on better and that they understand the coach's tactics. "I hope he can get me back into the team without spoiling a winning formula." The latest row about Matthaus comes after he revealed there had been a coup attempt in the German team before Euro 2000 with leading players seeking to depose Erich Ribbeck and install Matthaus as coach.
