Ribbeck: England did not deserve to win
England did not deserve to beat Germany 1-0 in their Euro 2000 match in Charleroi, German coach Erich Ribbeck declared after the Group A match.
"It's a defeat that hurts a lot, because we now only have a theoretical chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals by finishing second," Ribbeck said.
"If you take the whole of the match we did not deserve to lose.
"The English had one scoring opportunity, and we had several.
"But we are not making any complaints. We knew all about (David) Beckham, his game was analysed and re-analysed on videotape.
"We had our plan to mark him and all it needed was a moment of carelessness and we lost the match.
"We will have to do all we can to beat Portugal and count on the Romanians to do something against the English," added the unhappy German coach.
