Petit in injury scare
France midfielder Emmanuel Petit could be in danger of missing the start of Euro 2000 after picking up a back injury in the penalty shoot-out win against Japan on Sunday.
The Arsenal star seemed to be in distress at the end of the match, won 4-2 on penalties by France after the scores were locked at 2-2 at full-time in the Hassan II tournament clash in Casablanca.
The World Cup-winner said he was injured in the opening minutes of the match: "Right at the start of the match I fell badly on my back.
"Then right at the end of the match when I went to head the ball I felt a crick in my neck. Since then it has been hurting. I don't know if it is a vertebra or a rib."
No diagnosis was immediately available, but Euro 2000 rules allow a player to be added to a squad before 10 June should a medically certified injury rule a player out.
"My contract with Arsenal runs for the next three years and there is no reason for not staying there," he said.
A number of reports last season suggested Petit was unhappy in the English game and wanted a transfer.
"If something comes up maybe I will consider the opportunity to go but I won't do anything to trigger a transfer now. My first goal is to have a good European Championship," he said.
During his time at Arsenal, Petit has won the League and FA Cup Double as well as scoring the third goal in France's 3-0 World Cup final win over Brazil in 1998.
