Sol Campbell

Sol Campbell has earned the reputation as one of the finest centre-halves in the English game and his steadying influence and mature approach to the game have won him rave reviews.

Doubtless the Spurs defender, who has already worn the England armband, will captain his country in a major championships after Tony Adams and Alan Shearer decide to leave the international arena.

Campbell belies his huge physique with fleeting moments of skill, and many will remember him for his surging runs which turn defence into attack from England's World Cup campaign in France.

Tall, solid and uncompromising, the 25-year-old has become an England regular under Kevin Keegan and displayed his versatility by filling in at right-back during his country's play-off with Scotland.

However, Campbell would be the first to admit that his strongest position is in a central defensive role, where he has already shown he can out-muscle some of Europe's top strikers.
