Malta v England: Clockwatch
Malta 1-2 England
min: The game kicks off at 4.00 local time with a light breeze but a temperature in the high 80s.
mins: The first chance of the game falls to Malta. Carabott tries his luck from 25 yards but a tame shot doesn't trouble Richard Wright on his debut.
mins: Paul Scholes breaks down the right-hand side and his near-post cross is scrambled clear.
mins: Brincat runs clear down the inside right channel and strikes the ball first time on the volley. He connects well but the ball deflects off Sol Campbell for a corner.
mins: David Beckham delivers a trademark free-kick to the back post. Campbell nods down for Martin Keown to slot home but Kevin Phillips is offside and there is no goal.
mins: Malta are frustrating England but Dennis Wise finds Kevin Phillips free in the penalty area. But the ball won't drop quickly enough and Spiteri does well to block his shot.
mins - Malta 0-1 England: Another Beckham free-kick from the right flank finds Keown unmarked at the far post and he scores easily with a header.
mins: The game starts to hot up and Gary Neville breaks down the right and picks Nick Barmby out in the area but his point-blank header is saved by Barry.
mins: After two near scrapes, Malta win a penalty when Phil Neville and Wright get in a tangle and the keeper brings Carabott down. The Maltese player picks himself up and puts the penalty away but referee Braschi orders the kick to be retaken for encroachment.
mins - Malta 1-1 England: Carabott aims for the same corner but the ball hits the post and cannons in off Wright's head to give Malta a historic goal against England.
mins: Shearer accidentally catches Debono as they challenge for a high ball and blood pours from the Maltese player's head. Camilleri comes on to replace Debono.
mins: Quick footwork from Phillips wins England a free-kick on the edge of the area and Shearer claims the ball. But he drives the ball at the wall and it goes out for a corner.
mins: Barmby cuts open the Maltese defence with an exquisite through ball to Phillips who rounds the keeper but hits the side-netting from an acute angle.
mins: Theuma replaces the veteran Vella who is bringing the curtain down on a long and illustrious career for Malta.
mins: Campbell gets a clear header from a Beckham corner but the ball comes off the top of his head.
mins: The half-time whistle goes with England on the back foot. Sol Campbell has to scramble back to save England from going in at the break 2-1 down.
mins: England try to play the offside trap but get their timing wrong and Turner runs clear on goal. He delays his shot and Gary Neville gets back to block his shot.
mins: Shearer lands awkwardly after challenging for a high ball and Emile Heskey comes on to replace him. The problem seems to be with Shearer's knee.
mins: A Beckham free-kick appears to hit the arm of one of the Maltese defenders, but the linesman has already flagged for offside.
mins: England make a double substitution bringing on Robbie Fowler and Gareth Southgate for Phillips and Keown.
mins: Heskey surges down the right flank and drives the ball low and hard to the near post where Scholes meets it first time and puts it just over the bar.
mins: England have the ball in the back of the net again, but Fowler's effort is ruled out for a foul by Campbell.
mins: Beckham's free-kicks are proving to be England's most dangerous weapon and Campbell heads just wide as he stretches to meet the ball.
mins: Another double substitution sees Steve McManaman replace Scholes and Paul Ince win his 50th cap in place of Wise.
mins: England are starting to exert some pressure and Paul Ince gets his head to a corner but the ball bounces wide of the post.
mins: Ince picks up the ball as a Maltese attack breaks down. The Boro player surges upfield and feeds Barmby who crosses for Heskey, but the Liverpool striker puts his header over the bar.
mins - Malta 1-2 England: McManaman runs at the defence and slips the ball through to Barmby. The Everton player evades one challenge and pulls the ball back to Heskey who makes up for his last miss with a simple tap-in.
mins: Heskey is in the thick of the action as Fowler picks out his Liverpool team-mate with a chip and Heskey puts a powerful header wide of the post.
mins: Barmby is doing his chances of making the starting line-up for England's match with Portugal no harm as he meets a Barry cross with a powerful volley that the keeper does well to save.
mins: Fowler thinks he's won a penalty but the referee's assistant is flagging for offside.
mins: Wright's debut turns into a nightmare as he gives away a second penalty. But Wright makes up for his own error by saving Carabott's spot-kick with his feet.
mins: England are fortunate once again as Wright saves with his feet once more with a Maltese attacker clean through on goal.
mins: Barmby is unfortunate to finish the game without a goal as Gary Neville picks him out but he heads over the bar.
