Ferdinand vows to knuckle down
West Ham defender Rio Ferdinand says he will work extra hard to ensure he can get back into the England reckoning after being left out of Kevin Keegan's Euro 2000 squad.
Ferdinand was one of six players to miss out after Keegan trimmed his preliminary squad to 22.
The squad has now flown to Malta to continue final preparations for next week's tournament, while Ferdinand is forced to watch from home.
"I'm obviously disappointed but good luck to the boys," Ferdinand said after learning his fate.
"The gaffer has his own opinion and his is the one that is important so I just have to go back to West Ham and go on working hard."
Andy Cole, David James and Kieron Dyer were also left out of Keegan's final squad, while Jamie Redknapp and Ray Parlour withdrew due to injury.
He said: "Rio Ferdinand and Kieron Dyer will play many more games for England, whether Kevin Keegan is in charge or whoever else is in charge."
England face Malta on Saturday in their final friendly before their Euro 2000 campaign begins against Portugal on June 12.
