Cole axed by Keegan

Cole (right) misses out, while Heskey gets the nod
As England kicked off against Ukraine in the Euro 2000 warm-up, Andy Cole was nowhere to be seen having been overlooked for the friendly at Wembley.

It now looks almost certain the Manchester United frontman will miss the European Championships.

Keegan instead paired Robbie Fowler with skipper Alan Shearer up front, while Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips was named on the bench.

Dreams over

The Euro 2000 dreams of four England players were ended on Wednesday afternoon, when they were told of their fate by Kevin Keegan.

The England manager will announce his 22-strong line-up for the Championship after the game against Ukraine.

There is never an easy way to tell people in this sort of situation

There is still much speculation concerning the identity of the unlucky foursome.

Keegan remarked before he had spoken with the players: "There is never an easy way to tell people in this sort of situation, but I will see each one individually and tell them the truth."

Heartache

The midfield duo of Arsenal's Ray Parlour and Liverpool's Jamie Redknapp have already been ruled out through injury.

But the question remains: who are the other four players who are suffering Euro 2000 heartache?

Aston Villa's David James may have lost the third goalkeeping spot to Richard Wright after the Ipswich No.1's outstanding performance in the Division One play-off final win over Barnsley.

And with Fowler set to beat Cole up front, that leaves defenders Rio Ferdinand and Gareth Barry, and midfielders Kieron Dyer and Nick Barmby.

Encouragement

The England boss said he will have had words of encouragement for those who didn't make his squad.

"Every single player who has been with us, plus the two or three who are injured, are the future of English football - and not just Euro 2000.

Keegan added: "There is a possibility that we might have to alter things if there is a bad injury against the Ukraine.

"But I don't think a player will be too disappointed if he finds himself out of the squad at 2pm and back in at 10pm."
