Michael Owen and Dennis Wise have "slight" injuries
England coach Kevin Keegan has pulled Michael Owen and Dennis Wise out of Wednesday's Wembley friendly against Ukraine.

The pair have been withdrawn because of "slight" back injuries.

There are no injury worries long term - they all came through the Brazil game unscathed except for Ray Parlour

But Keegan confirmed Real Madrid star Steve McManaman would start and Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard is also likely to make his full debut.

Keegan also revealed that Gerrard's Liverpool team-mate Jamie Redknapp and Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour are to have scans on knee injuries.

"Jamie Redknapp and Ray Parlour are at this moment in time being scanned," Keegan said.

"Everyone trained on Tuesday morning, with the exception of Michael Owen and Dennis Wise - both have got slightly sore backs.

Steve McManaman is to be given a free role in midfield
"It's nothing serious, just as a precaution I've pulled them out. Certainly I won't consider those two for the game.

Keegan, who has yet to announce his team, said: "Certainly Steven Gerrard and Steve McManaman will play. They are the only two who know they are playing.

"Everything I've seen about Gerrard tells me he will shine at international level.

"Steve McManaman will be given an absolute free role, I think he deserves that opportunity.

"I've always asked him to do something a bit different for England.

"I may well ask him again in Euro 2000 to do something different, but for the Ukraine game I'm going to say to him go on and do what you have done for Madrid for the last six to eight weeks.

"And we'll work around you. Macca has earned that right."
